European Joint Programming Initiatives – Opportunities for U.S.- EU Research Collaboration on Societal Challenges

This workshop will be held on 31st of January 2018 at Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington DC from 1:30 pm until 7p and reception will feature U.S. federal funding agencies (NSF, USDA, EPA, and NOAA) together with European Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs). JPIs are EU Member States driven initiatives in which EU national funding agencies join forces and coordinate efforts to fund research for tackling global societal challenges jointly. The workshop that will cover topics of antimicrobial resistance, water, health, marine, agriculture, and climate is a follow-up of an event that took place in Brussels in November 2016. At the first joint JPI - U.S. funding agency workshop US federal agencies as well as JPI representatives met and expressed their large interest to cooperate. This second workshop will feature best practices of U.S.-EU research collaboration on these global social challenges. It will also present the results and concrete cooperation potentials coming out of the bilateral meetings between US agencies and the JPIs in the form of panel discussions on each topic. Members of U.S. federal agencies are encouraged to attend to learn both about these experiences as well as potential areas of collaboration with European counterparts.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Identify emerging topics for potential future joint calls for U.S.-EU research collaboration

2. Facilitate exchange of knowledge and cooperation with key research funding agencies in the U.S. and EU

3. Share best practices in how U.S. federal agencies and European JPIs / national funding agencies can collaborate on topics of mutual interest.

Reception to follow.
